My family and I have been there dozens of times and have even been members of the farmstead. It’s a beautiful place to explore with your family!

The farmstead is named after Deanna Rose, a former Overland Park police officer who dedicated her life to educating children about farm animals and agriculture. Today, the farmstead carries on her legacy by providing an interactive learning experience for visitors of all ages.

One of the main attractions of the farmstead is the animal farm, where visitors can interact with a variety of farm animals, including goats, cows, horses, pigs, and more. The animal farm also features a petting zoo, where children can feed and touch the animals under the supervision of staff. My children absolutely love feeding the baby goats and for only $1 each, it’s a super affordable add-on while you’re visiting.

That’s the thing about visiting Deanna Rose Farmstead. It already has affordable admission ($5 per person, over age 3) and then you can choose what other add-ons you would like to experience. I love this because sometimes my kids are more interested in the playgrounds than the additional activities so we don’t have to spend extra when they aren’t interested that day. It also gives us something new to try each time we come back!

Here are some of the add-on experiences inside Deanna Rose:

  • Bottle Feeding Goats ($1 a bottle)

  • Fishing ($3)

  • Feeding Goats in the Petting Pen (coin-operated dispensers or bags of food available for $3)

  • Mining for Gems ($5-$8)

  • Wagon Rides ($3)

Deanna Rose Children's Farmstead is not only a great destination for those interested in farm animals and agriculture, but it's also a family-friendly activity in the Kansas City metro area. With its wide range of activities and exhibits, the farmstead provides something for everyone. It’s the perfect attraction for preschoolers, but children up to 10 years old may also enjoy this outdoor family-friendly activity.

For families with young children, the petting zoo and pony rides are a big hit, as kids get to interact with and learn about the animals in a safe and supervised environment. It’s super stroller friendly throughout the Farmstead. We typically take a wagon or stroller for breaks or for when my daughter would nap on the go. We love the Sit-to-Stand double stroller from Baby Trend especially!

The farmstead also has a playground, featuring a miniature farmstead play area for younger children called Morgan’s Playground next to the Schoolhouse. This is a great, smaller playground away from all the hustle and bustle of the east side playgrounds. But if you have kids of various ages you will also enjoy the newer toddler playground by the pavilion on the east side of Deanna Rose!

There are two larger playgrounds for older children on the east side of Deanna Rose. The Prairie Playground features a ride-on tractor, a large play structure, sand diggers, ride-on toys, and a little prairie house. The Dairy Barn features two large slides that children can access from inside the Barn.

Note: The Dairy Barn is a tight squeeze and I have gotten bumped around a time or two when I tried to go up with my kids. It’s a bumpy ride, friends!

I always see so many grandparents enjoying Deanna Rose with their grandchildren!

For those interested in history and culture, the farmstead has a historic one-room schoolhouse and a Kanza Indian encampment, providing insights into the lives of early settlers and indigenous people in the region. The farmstead also features a replica of an old-time western town, complete with a sheriff's office, bank, blacksmith, saloon, and ice cream parlor. Here you can purchase snacks or light lunch options as well as a delicious scoop of ice cream! I love that they have affordable food and drink options here, unlike major theme parks or sporting events.

Note: No outside food or drinks are allowed inside besides a water bottle, baby items, and children’s snacks. We take our “tiny backpacks” with a change of clothes, diaper, and water bottle. You can pack a picnic and enjoy it outside of the Farmstead at the playground near the parking lot. You can always go back inside when you’re done to explore more, just get your hand stamped before you exit!
